While Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, renowned for his thrilling novel series "Mercy" and "Department Q," remains tight-lipped about his health, he recently opened up about the life-altering impact of his diagnosis. In an interview with "Zeit Verbrechen," the 74-year-old author lamented, "My cancer curbs my liberty; treatment schedules dominate my life."

Now, he can hardly travel on a whim, lugging around no more than five kilos at a time (making grocery shopping a challenge). A walking stick aids him in traversing longer distances, and some days, exhaustion drags him down.

Yet, Adler-Olsen shares a silver lining: his loving wife is by his side, providing constant support. This STRONG WILL powering him through. "Being by my side fuels my determination to fight even harder," he emphasized.

Dependency on medical professionals and treatments casts him in a "wholly unfamiliar life" compared to his aspirations at this stage. What he yearns for most is a return to his former self.

However, he holds a cautious optimism, certain his dedicated team of doctors will ensure he won't succumb to the disease. The improvement in his condition, evident a year, even half a year ago, gives him a boost. Each stepping stone he crosses affirms his conviction that the treatments are working, sustaining hope for the road ahead.

"I refuses to give in"

Adler-Olsen's cancer diagnosis hasn't hindered his writing process. "Whenever I have the strength, I write as I always have. I still have so many ideas yet to share," he affirmed.

In early February, Adler-Olsen publicly disclosed his health struggles, sending shockwaves through the literary world. Known for creating some of the most gripping Scandinavian crime titles, millennia of his books have sold, earned countless awards, and been adapted into movies.

In the interview, Adler-Olsen shared that the Department Q series' legacy will live on through the hands of authors Line Holm and Stine Bolther. The first installment of this highly anticipated continuation dropped in Denmark in late March, and it's set to hit German shelves in the fall with the title "Dead Souls Don't Sing."
