Venture with us as Arved Fuchs embarks on a new adventure, setting sail for the ambitious expedition "Ocean Change" Leg 2025. His trusty vessel, the historic sailing ship "Dagmar Aaen," braved the waters of Flensburg on a brisk Sunday. In an interview with the German Press Agency prior to the departure, Fuchs shared his excitement about the project they've been nurturing for ten years: "The mission is crystal clear – climate change and marine protection are intricately linked."

With a diverse team by his side, this climatologist-turned-polar explorer embarks on a journey that transcends geographical boundaries. Their maiden voyage steers its course through the eastern Baltic Sea, the North Sea, and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. The path zigzags past Stralsund, Greifswald, Swinemünde (Poland), Klaipeda (Lithuania), Riga (Latvia), and Gotland (Sweden), meandering through the Kattegat and Skagerrak into the North Sea. The adventures on the horizon include a visit to the idyllic island of Föhr, sailing through the English Channel, exploring Brittany and Cornwall, and diving into the heart of the eastern Atlantic. If all goes well, they'll find their way back to the warm embrace of Flensburg by late August.

Smart technology for advanced measurement and collection

Embarking on this journey, Fuchs noted the "Dagmar Aaen" offers an opportunity to collect data in remote areas where research vessels are scarce. Together with advanced measurement technology, his crew can gather and share data that could help fill crucial knowledge gaps.

The Ocean Change project, founded by Fuchs in 2015, is dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of ocean changes and their repercussions on the climate and coastal landscapes.

  1. Arved Fuchs' journey on the "Ocean Change" Leg 2025, despite its focus on climate change and marine protection, also seeks to fill crucial knowledge gaps through advanced measurement technology on board the Dagmar Aaen, a ship that offers a unique opportunity to collect data in remote areas where research vessels are scarce.
  2. As part of the Ocean Change project, Arved Fuchs aims to study the complex relationship between climate change and marine protection by sailing the Dagmar Aaen through the eastern Baltic Sea, the North Sea, and the eastern Atlantic Ocean, with stops in various European cities and islands.
  3. During the "Ocean Change" Leg 2025, Arved Fuchs and his team will investigate the effects of climate change on the Atlantic and North Atlantic Current, building on ten years of ocean change expeditions founded by Fuchs in 2015, which focus on understanding ocean changes and their impact on the climate and coastal landscapes.
