Amqui Truck Attack Trial Gets Heated: Steeve Gagnon's Outburst

Our Insights

The intense trial of Steeve Gagnon, accused of intentionally driving his truck into pedestrians in Amqui, shaking the community back in 2023, took an unexpected turn on Tuesday in Rimouski court.

What Transpired in the Courtroom

The trial, which had been underway since May 15 with jury selection, faced an unusual interruption. The defendant, Steeve Gagnon, 40, found himself in hot water after a heated exchange with a medical witness, Dr. Denis Normand Boucher. In response to questions, Gagnon expressed hostility toward doctors and, to the court's dismay, launched a profanity-laced verbal attack on the witness and, it seemed, the presiding judge as well.

The outburst, which was met with disapproval from Judge Louis Dionne, led to a powerful reaction. Rattled by the confrontation, the judge decided to remove Gagnon from the courtroom and adjourn the trial for a while to restore a sense of calm.

As Judge Dionne sent the jury out, tension filled the air. "This ain't gonna fly, old man," Gagnon shouted, directing his words, perhaps, at the judge.

Rewind to the Previous Day

Gagnon's trial had been dominated by a series of witnesses, each testifying to the escalating anger within the defendant toward society and doctors, as the prosecution seeks to establish a motive for the tragic incident.

Julien Blanchette, a childhood friend of Steeve Gagnon, described their shared history, explaining that Gagnon was, by all accounts, reserved and kind. The friendship went back to their shared childhood in Saint-Léon-le-Grand, a small village near Amqui.

However, as both men faced a work stoppage and financial struggles, things began to unravel. Gagnon's medical issues and ensuing unemployment left him in a desperate situation, unable to meet his financial obligations and strained relations with friends and landlords.

Looking Forward

The trial resumed the following day, having taken a brief hiatus after Tuesday's incident. Defense and prosecution lawyers suggested that the testimony of Dr. Boucher should be continued on Wednesday morning, as the atmosphere required a break for all parties involved.

"I think we need a break," Judge Dionne agreed, hoping to return to a more conducive environment for the continuation of the trial.
