Actress Katy Karrenbauer, known for her role in "Behind the Bars," expresses grief over the loss of her father.
In the world of RTL series "Behind Bars," Katy Karrenbauer shines as "Walter." Off-screen, though, she embarks on a far more emotional journey—a six-year race against time with a dementia-stricken father.
Warring Worlds, Unexpected Reunion
For almost five decades, Katy and her father Dieter remained estranged. That all changed when Dieter's partner succumbed to cancer in 2018, leaving Katy to take charge of her father's care. Despite the rocky past, she invited him to her Berlin home, shouldering the responsibility until his last breath. "I'm not regretting this move, even though it wasn't always a walk in the park," reflects Katy.
Last Breaths, Joyous Memories
During those six and a half years, Katy faced difficult decisions and watched Dieter endure numerous hospitalizations, including a critical kidney failure. Yet, he remained a fighter, narrowly escaping the jaws of death time and again. In his final days, he expressed his wish to celebrate his 93rd birthday—a wish he fulfilled with a few friends, music, and joy on May 12.
The Sweet Relief of Parting
Dieter passed away peacefully at 2 AM on May 23, with Katy by his side. He refused the artificial life support machines, and Katy did everything within her power to honor his wish. She played music, stroked his hair, and prayed until the end.
Living on Bare Minimum
Taking care of Dieter came at a hefty cost. Katy had to make tough financial decisions she never envisioned, such as relying on her meager pension to get by after exhausting all resources caring for her ailing father.
Lucid Moments, Cherished Time
While suffering from dementia, Dieter was often lucid. Katy encourages relatives of dementia patients to visit, as their presence can greatly improve the quality of life for those under care. "Spend time with them! Their presence yearns for you daily. You can make a huge difference in their lives," Katy expresses her sentiments.
Life's Beauty, Life's Regret
In his final moments, Dieter expressed his gratitude for life and for his daughter. "Life is so beautiful," he told her. Karrenbauer is moved to laughter, remembrances, and conversations with her father to this day.
Karrenbauer's bravery and dedication resound on the small screen as "Behind Bars" continues to captivate audiences.
