In Cannes, rising film star Paul Mescal discusses the challenges he faces with depression on set. "I think if you're prone to depression, it can sometimes be difficult on set because I'm not always presenting the same persona that's expected," said the Irish actor. He explained that acting often requires splitting one's personality, which can be beneficial for work but detrimental to one's overall wellbeing.

During the festival, Mescal can be seen alongside Josh O'Connor ("The Crown") in "The History of Sound," a historical drama about a gay love story, which is competing at the film festival. In addition, Mescal gained recognition for his role in "Normal People" and for playing a queer character in "The History of Sound," he said the industry is moving away from traditional masculine roles.

Comparisons have been drawn between "The History of Sound" and the cult film "Brokeback Mountain." However, Mescal expressed frustration with these comparisons, stating, "They seem a bit lazy and frustrating." He clarified that the two films differ significantly, particularly in the themes of repression versus celebration, and in the narrative style used to portray their stories of gay love.

Mescal will next be seen in the upcoming "Gladiator II" and received particularly excited reactions in Cannes whenever he appeared. "The History of Sound" is set to premiere later this week at the festival.
