Eric Dane Opens Up About His ALS Diagnosis and Its Progression

Actor Eric Dane experiences immobilization in his right arm.

In an exclusive interview with Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America," "Grey's Anatomy" star Eric Dane shares his struggles with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a debilitating nerve disease.

At 52, Dane is facing the daunting reality of an incurable illness that's already left him unable to move his right arm. He first noticed a weakness in his right hand, dismissing it as mere exhaustion from too much texting. However, after about nine months, doctors diagnosed him with ALS.

Dane recalls the moment he learned of his diagnosis, "I'll never forget those three letters. As soon as I wake up, I see them. It's not a dream."

Impact on His Daily Life

While his left side is functioning, Dane anticipates losing the use of his left hand in the coming months. This grim prospect has raised concerns about his legs being affected soon as well. He shares, "I feel like I'll lose the use of my legs in a few months."

When asked about his support system, Dane turns to his wife, Rebecca Gayheart. Despite a brief divorce filing in 2018 due to "irreconcilable differences," the couple has withdrawn their petition and remain married.

Dane expressed his gratitude towards his family, particularly his two daughters, Billie and Georgia. He emphasized the importance of letting them know they are loved every day.

The Fight Against ALS: Current and Emerging Treatments

Current treatments for ALS focus on slowing disease progression and managing symptoms, as there is no cure. These treatments include Riluzole (Rilutek), Edaravone (Radicava), Tirzepatide, and supportive care like physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and respiratory support.

Emerging treatments such as Tofersen, NurOwn Therapy, Ulefnersen (Jacifusen), and Focused Ultrasound offer hope for improved management and potential cures for ALS. Researchers are still working to fully understand their efficacy and safety.

Though the road ahead is challenging, Dane continues to fight with the unwavering support of his loved ones.
