His wife Simone Harari Baulieu announced the news to the Agence France-Presse (AFP). The world-renowned scientist is best known for his work on steroid hormones, the invention of the abortion pill RU 486, and his relentless pursuit of human dignity.

Dedicated Life of Science and Humanity

Émile Baulieu was born as Émile Blum on December 12, 1926, in Strasbourg, France. During World War II, he joined the French Resistance, changed his name, and remained unwavering in his commitment to progress through science. A doctor of medicine, doctor of science, and endocrinologist, Baulieu dedicated his life to the study of hormones, founding Research Unit 33 at the Institut national de la santé et de la recherche médicale (Inserm) in 1963.

A Revolution in Abortion Care

In 1982, Émile Baulieu created a medical revolution with the formulation of the abortion pill - RU 486. This groundbreaking invention offered millions of women worldwide the option of voluntary medical abortion, markedly improving reproductive health accessibility and choice. Despite facing harsh criticism and threats from anti-abortion groups, Baulieu's dedication to women's freedom and human dignity never wavered.

His research on the steroid hormone DHEA and its anti-aging effects led him to work with neurosteroids, finding an innovative treatment for depression, currently being clinically tested in several university hospitals. Émile Baulieu, an advocate of neurodegenerative disease treatment, established the Baulieu Institute in 2008, focused on Alzheimer's research.

Awards and Legacy

Émile Baulieu was awarded the esteemed Lasker Prize, the highest scientific award in the United States. He was married to Simone Harari and was preceded in death by his first wife, Yolande Compagnon. Survived by three children, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren, his impact extends far beyond his scientific achievements, leaving an indelible mark on reproductive health policies and women's rights universally.
